The Universal Translator was seen twice in TOS. The first design was as carried by Kirk in Arena, and was essentially the top half of this model. This longer design was seen in Metamorphosis, crafted by Spock from scavenged shuttlecraft components. In operation onscreen, lights on the side would blink randomly, and the device would speak in a female voice, translating the thoughts of the Companion.

Machined aluminum and steel replica, with six voice-activated lights which respond to changes in sound intensity. Size and proportions taken directly from a screen-used original.
