Star Trek: The Original Series, Type-II Hand Phaser

original movie prop weapon

This is a casting of a screen-used/original mid-grade, or "dummy", Phaser as seen on TOS. There were three styles of Phaser prop used during the series; hero (had all functional components, ie. light-up beam emitter, removable handle, working P1 release, full metal parts, etc.), mid-grade (had some metal parts, may have had some working parts) and the "$1.99 special", also referred to as "crapazoid" Phasers (had no metal parts, no working parts, was made of vacu-formed plastic so body details were diminished). I have it on good authority the body of this Phaser kit was cast from a screen-used original, as apparently is the handle, however the origins of the P1 are unknown, although there are some design elements that support the opinion it too may be cast from a screen-used piece. Made of solid-cast resin, I intend to modify some parts of it to make it a mid-grade prop with metal upgrades. The second pic shows the progress I have made thus far on modifying it to include a plexi P2 sight, a plexi P1 sight (may be functional or static) and metal parts (nozzle, side knob, sight plate, brass release rod, ten-turn on P2; sight plate, brass emitter and aluminum thumbwheel on P1). I have drilled out the hole for the side knob beneath the P1 cradle, and have painted the P2 body the correct colour and am waiting on obtaining the remaining metal upgrade parts in order to complete it.
