Ben-Hur, Snake & wheel Standard.

original movie prop

As seen on screen in the 1959 movie Ben-Hur, in the Rome Naval
Battle Victory Parade scene - a segment sadly deleted entirely
from the recent 2016 remake. The 1959 Ben-Hur is said to have
saved the MGM studio, for awhile that is. A sign of the end
came with a mega studio prop and costume auction held in 1970,
in which this standard was sold off to the collecting pubic.
This prop standard had also been used in MGM's 1951 Quo Vadis,
1953 Julius Caesar, and the 1955 Roman theme musical Jupiter's
Daughter. This hand carved wooden snake standard likely also
dates back to the silent 1925 Ben Hur, as the design has a spoked
chariot wheel center - thus at least a five times movie veteran.
This Snake and wheel pole top device exactly matches this listing
provided on screen photo. It Would be nice to know if the other Roman
prop standards also survive?
