Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Scientist's Pin

Here is an unusual item that I picked up - it is a scientist's pin as seen in the production of Star Trek III: The Search For Spock. The only costume that I have seen this pin attached to is that of Dr. David Marcus, If you will notice, one of the dots on the pic is colored black and one of the slanted stripes is colored black (presumably some form or ranking or other organizational designation). I have studied the HD screen-caps of the one worn by Marcus and I cannot see the black colored dot or slanted stripe. I have also not seen this pin worn by another character. It is even possible that the one Marcus is wearing has a different paint scheme of the maroon color.
