Hellraiser: Hellseeker, Round Puzzle Box

original movie prop

This is a round Lament Configuration Puzzle Box from Hellraiser 6: Hellseeker. This prop is seen in a quick scene when the puzzle box is rolled toward the main character. While it's rolling, it morphs from the sphere into the well-known cube form. Quote from Tim Day (one of the writers) about the round puzzle box: "Neither Pinhead nor the puzzle box were ever supposed to become the icons for the series that they have. Clive always envisioned multiple style puzzle boxes and doors that would lead to the world of the Cenobites. I tried to inject a new puzzle box into Hellseeker. I simply wanted to make the puzzle box round. [Director Rick Bota] called me after I turned in my draft and said everyone loved the script except for one word – ROUND. So that’s why when Trevor is given the Puzzle Box, it’s round at first and then turns into the classic version as it rolls across the table."

The second image is a sequence of 'pre-effects' images. The guy holding the sphere sets it on the counter. Someone off-screen prods it with a pipe to make it roll. The last shot shows a cube with a string attached to it. It looks like they filmed someone pulling the string (and the box) back toward them and then reversed the footage to get the box rolling in the same direction as the sphere. The two images are 'attached' together with a slight morph effect.
