Star Trek: Enterprise, Pocket Transit Compass

replica movie prop

It's from the early 20th century. It should help keep you pointed in the right direction.

In fourth season episode Borderland, T'Pol becomes a Starfleet officer with the rank of Commander, and Archer gives her this gift in celebration of her transition.

This clever instrument is known as the Brunton Pocket Transit, first patented in 1894. Brunton's design became a mainstay for many professionals, particularly geologists, in the years after it was introduced, incorporating the features of a surveyor's compass, prismatic compass, clinometer, hand level, and plumb, as well as being adjustable for magnetic declination, and incorporating a needle lift lock when the lid is closed.

Unfortunately, this particular device isn't what Archer believes it is.  Authentic BPT compasses, and similarly functional compasses, were all built from aluminum right from the start, until the switch to polycarbonate in the 1980s.  This item is a latter-day fabrication; pseudo-vintage brass Brunton compass replicas first appeared in 1979, sold by the Stanley London company of Anaheim, California. These are quite cheaply made, and although the compass functions, the other features are too inaccurate for real world use.
