Mars Attacks!, Playboy Magazine References

original movie prop

Playboy magazine references used in the production of Tim Burton's sci-fi comedy Mars Attacks!. Invading Martians are fascinated by the human body as they do not have external genitals like earthlings. In the film, the Martian leader is seen examining a Playboy magazine. This magazine was digitally created using multiple real-word references by the visual artists at Industrial Light and Magic. These magazines are the issues referenced by the artists at ILM. First, the cover of the magazine was produced from the November 1967 issue of Playboy showing a the back of a woman wearing a white dress. The add on the reverse side of the magazine was taken from a feature Woody Allen did for the same issue as the cover. The centerfold being examined by the Martian was taken from the June 1967 issue of Playboy and is an image of model Pal Joey. In order to obtain a PG-13 rating for the film, the originally uncensored photo of Pal Joey is shown on screen with a towel covering the model's breasts. Included with this set is an original production photo showing the Martian examining the original uncensored image.
