Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Photon Collector

original movie prop

Admiral, we have found the nuclear wessel!   And Admiral - It is the Enterprise!

When Kirk and crew land in the 20th century in search of humpback whales, they find that the dilithium powering their Bird of Prey has begun to decrystalize, with less than 24 hours left before complete system failure. The only way to re-order the dilithium crystalline structure in this era is to collect sufficient high energy photons from a 'toxic' fission nuclear reactor and inject them directly into the dilithium chamber.  Chekov and Uhura are tasked with acquiring those photons, using this device to do so on a covert mission to the closest nuclear reactor, aboard the aircraft carrier Enterprise.

One of three production-made prop photon collectors created for the movie by Richard Coyle, this piece is composed of hard plastic, with separable handle and main collector body.  There are 3 illuminating areas on the body, each with variable lighting controlled by rheostats on the device face.  An on/off toggle switch, seen in use onscreen, is also present on the collecting face.
