The NeverEnding Story, Original Production Made Book Cover Auryn

original movie prop

A production backup snake emblem from the book cover in Wolfgang Petersen’s 1984 fantasy adventure The Neverending Story. Meek, troubled Bastien (Barret Oliver) runs away from school bullies and finds himself in an old bookshop. There he discovers a mysterious book entitled The Neverending Story, which opens up unexpected and fantastical possibilities for him. This style of emblem is clearly seen on the book’s cover throughout the film – a variation of it is worn on a necklace by Atreyu (Noah Hathaway) too. This is one of several emblems made for production, as there were several versions of the book made for different scenes. Made from cast resin, the emblem features two intertwined snakes biting one another’s tails – the symbol of Oroborus or infinity. The piece is designed to be symmetrical, from the snake heads down to each overlaid set of coils. Fine stippling creates a diamond pattern that covers each snake. The emblem has been painted to resemble copper and is flat on the reverse. Displaying some worn and dirt-marked areas form use in production, the item remains in very good overall condition. The Auryn is displayed on a US release book by Michael Ende and customized to appear as in the movie by Geekify.
