Boardwalk Empire, Nucky's Red Politician Suit

original movie costume

Three-piece suit worn by Steve Buscemi as Atlantic City Treasurer "Enoch Thompson" in the Season 1 episodes "The Emerald City” and “A Return to Normalcy” as well as the Season 2 episode “Two Boats and a Lifeguard”. Custom-made from red ground with light blue window pane Scottish wool by New York City master tailor Martin Greenfield. Suit exactly matches what is seen on-screen being worn by "Nucky". The custom-made shirt, with detachable collar, and the tie were worn by "Nucky" in Season 2. Interestingly, the production wardrobe tags sewn in the jacket, vest and pants name the character as "Nucky Johnson", which is the name of the historical Atlantic City Treasurer who the character of "Nucky Thompson" was modeled after.

"Nucky" runs the whole gamut of 1920s suits, from conservative pinstripes to loud red windowpane suits like this. The dark conservative suits are reserved for his more business-like roles, as businessman were – and still tend to be – taken more seriously when they were dressed conservatively. Thus, this red number is one of his “politician” suits. Back in the ’20s, the politicians (especially corrupt ones) were flashy and the gangsters were toned down.
