Four of these threaded bolts are used to deactivate the Nostromo's nuclear reactor coolant systems, initiating the self-destruct sequence Ripley hopes will destroy the malevolent creature that has killed the rest of the ship's crew.  Also seen again in the 2014 survival horror video game Alien: Isolation, where the player has to activate a similar mechanism about a xenomorph-infested space station.
