48 Hrs., Nick Nolte as Jack Cates Stunt Gun Prop

original movie prop

This foam prop gun is the stunt stand-in for the Smith & Wesson Model 29, used by both Nick Nolte as detective Jack Cates and by James Remar as criminal Albert Ganz, in the seminal "buddy cop" film 48 Hrs. In the film, Nolte's character can be seen hitting Remar's with his gun during a scuffle, as well as tossing it to Remar after he's outgunned.  The bad guy keeps the stolen gun, much to the detective's chagrin, and eventually holds it to the head of Eddie Murphy's character Reggie Hammond later in the film.

The hero gun used by Nolte's character is a Smith & Wesson Model 29 with a custom grip, but this stunt gun is a lookalike Colt Trooper.  The differences aren't easily noticeable in shots of the stunt gun(s) being used to attack Remar's character, and to toss to him.  This was the use of a stock prop gun of a similar model, rather than the creation of one molded from the hero specifically for the film, which is common today. In fact, I've listed another stunt gun from a different scene in the same film, and in that case screenshots of the hero and stunt used for the same scenes show them to be of very different color & style, despite appearing in back-to-back shots cutting from one to the other and back.

It appears to have an internal armature and it's in good condition for its age, though the foam has become dry, with some cracked paint. It comes with a COA from Van Eaton Galleries, signed by noted collector Chris Kiszka and stating that it was obtained directly from a production member.

A rare artifact from the first great "buddy cop" film of the 80s, which set off a wave of similar movies, including the Beverly Hills Cop series which would also star Eddie Murphy.

Special thanks to YourProps user McHale for helping to identify the model this stunt gun is based on.
