Super Mario Bros., King Koopa’s (Dennis Hopper) Faux Snakeskin Jacket

original movie costume

This is Dennis Hopper's King Koopa jacket from the 1993 blockbuster Super Mario Bros. The faux snakeskin jacket was custom-made specifically for Hopper to wear in the movie, and has scaled texture to evoke Koopa’s slippery, reptilian nature. Despite looking black, the jacket is actually a dark blue color. Eerily purchased mere hours before the legendary actor's death, it is customary to whisper “…Bob-omb!” in his memory after viewing the iconic wardrobe piece. Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto cites Easy Rider (1969), which was directed by Hopper, as a “great influence.” Obtained from The Golden Closet, this costume was originally acquired by Eastern Costume Co. directly from the movie’s costume house when they closed doors.
