The Great Profile, John Barrymore Plaque

original production material

A hand hammered, copper plate, bas relief plaque, over plaster, of 'The Great Profile' in youth - possibly the best actor of his generation. The piece was made by jeweler Harry Koons who has signed the plate and attached his business card to the reverse. It came out of Rudy Vallee's estate (1901-1986) who gave Barrymore work on his radio show when alcohol and poor health started taking their toll on him in the late 1930s. These last films were parodies of Barrymore as a ham actor - far removed from the great star of HAMLET, GRAND HOTEL and DON JUAN.
Barrymore and Rudy in April of 1942 doing Valle's show. This may be the last image taken of him, as during rehearsal for his next appearance, on May 19th, Barrymore collapsed and died in hospital ten days later. He was 60 years old.
