Les Miserables, Jean ValJean (Michael Rennie) costume
original movie costume
Jean Valjean’s (Michael Rennie) tailcoat and trousers from Lewis Milestone’s 1952 drama history film Les Misérables.
A parole violator in early 19th Century France, during the second revolution, is relentlessly pursued and persecuted by an obsessive policeman.
Though not obviously seen on screen, Jean Valjean wore the clothes of an upstanding member of society after becoming a factory manager and ultimately mayor of a small country village. The costume consists of a burgundy tailcoat (Size 36 chest) with plastic buttons and a pair of beige trousers (32W) with plastic buttons and a metal zip and fastener. The items feature costumer labels with actor Michael Rennie’s name printed on. The costume shows minimal wear from production use with some small tears and frayed threads, however, considering the age of the piece it remains in an excellent condition.
