Shepherd Of The Hills, Harry Carey Suit

original movie costume

A blue wool suit worn by Harry Carey in the John Wayne starring film - his first in Technicolor. In the film, Harry comes as a stranger to the hills, but in reality is Wayne's long lost father. In real life, Wayne and Carey had a father son/mentor relationship. Harry was one of the original film pioneers, appearing in his first movie in 1908. He went to BIOGRAPH the year later, with DW Griffith, and became a very early cowboy star, doing his own stunts, that continued to Hollywood and great fame in the 20's, many directed by John Ford. His deep, gravely voice made the transition to sound, and he finished his long career as an in demand character actor. Ford's 3 GODFATHERS (1948) is dedicated to Harry. Later, in the final scene of THE SEARCHERS (1956), John Wayne turns in the doorway and grasps his elbow as another tribute to Harry, as this was something Harry did in his earliest films. His widow Olive played the mother in the film and his son Harry Jr was brought into the Ford Stock Company ten years previously.

They would co star again six years later in ANGEL AND THE BADMAN (now with Wayne as producer) one of Harry's last films. He died in September 1947.
