The Flintstones, Flintstone’s Animation Cels

original production artwork

HANNA-BARBERA STUDIO / PLAYHOUSE PICTURES The Flintstones: Fruity and the Beast (1980) three (3) original production animation cel paintings gouache on four (4) untrimmed animation cel sheets, image sizes: 8.75" x 7.25", 6" x 5.5" and 4" x 4.5" These three (3) original hand-painted animation cels of Barney Rubble and Fred Flinstone were created and photographed in production of an animated television commercial for Post Fruity Pebbles breakfast cereal. Barney dresses as a "Beast" to scare Fred and trick him out of his delicious bowl of cereal. These cels are from two scenes: two (2) cels of Barney in disguise emerging from the bushes (scene 2) and one (2) of Fred after Barney's headdress comes off and lands of Fred (scene 8). The image of Barney and foliage is painted on two (2) cel levels. Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles cereals were released nationwide in 1970 after Post secured licensing rights to characters in Hanna-Barbera's The Flintstones cartoons. They were named for Fred and Wilma's darling daughter, Pebbles, and the first brand ever created around a media character. Playhouse Pictures, under art director Scott Shaw, produced a number of the Pebbles commercials in the 1980s. Studio designations "11", Sc 2 B-11", "7" and "Sc 8 F-95A appear at the bottom of the sheets to mark each cel's place in the film or scene.
