Star Trek: The Next Generation, Enterprise-C Type 2 Phaser

original movie prop weapon

In fan favorite TNG episode Yesterday's Enterprise, the predecessor to the Enterprise-D travels forward in time 22 years through a temporal rift, profoundly altering the future in the process. The Enterprise-C crew carried these older style phasers, reminiscent of the phasers seen in Star Trek II.

This static screen-used prop, as worn by Lt. Castillo, is made of lightweight vacuform plastic, with a simple control panel decal and tape accents, in a friction-fit holster.

From the collection of Gary Nardino, producer of Star Trek III.  Created by Ed Miarecki.

What is never explained is why the Enterprise-C crew were carrying this style of phaser in their original time of 2344, nearly 60 years after it had been supplanted by other phaser designs.
