In the Hellboy comic book story Almost Colossus, the origins of Roger the Homunculus are explored. Having just been re-animated by Liz Sherman in the previous story Wake the Devil, Roger initially has no idea who he is, or even why he exists. The appearance of another homunculus, Roger's 'brother', bearing this black sun pendant once worn by their 'father', introduces us to the story of Edel Mischrasse, a 16th century German philosopher and alchemist who discovered the means to bring inanimate figures to life, created two such beings, and who was ultimately killed by the first of these after he had abandoned it as inferior.
