In Hellboy comic Almost Colossus, 16th century German philosopher and alchemist Edel Mischrasse discovers the means to create homunculi, inanimate figures brought to life. Seized by the Inquisition for necromancy, Mischrasse swallows the key to a lockbox containing his notes and laboratory locations during his arrest. He isn't imprisoned for long though before his first flawed homunculus finds him, kills him, and tears the key from his guts.
