Chinatown, Detective Loach Suit

original movie costume

You can't be a Baby Boomer and not know this face. Richard "Dick" Bakalyan started his film career in the 50s playing a variety of delinquents. In the 60s he graduated to tough guy, henchman and gangster roles, many in comedic relief, such as his six appearances on BATMAN supporting villains King Tut, Louie the Lilac, Riddler and Joker. He was a favorite of Sinatra, appearing in three films with him and on nearly every prime time TV show as a guest star. But, when he died two years ago, every obituary claimed the highlight of his career was playing Loach in CHINATOWN.

This is his period, double breasted suit, worn in every scene he is in, concluding with the finale when he shoots and kills Faye Dunaway's character. Although the style mimics the fine tailored suits Nicholson's JJ Gittes wears, this off the rack piece hangs on the tag along detective who detests and spars with Gittes.
