Here is a (somewhat) rare item from DS9 - a resin Bajoran Communicator Badge from the first season - with the top detail point still attached.
During the first season, as I am told, all of the badges were resin and the tips tended to break and the broken badges even made it into official photography on occasion.
To keep this from happening the badges were switched to metal for season two and onward.
And the very futuristic velcro - first invented by Vulcans and introduced to humans by an ancestor of T'Pol (if ST:ENT is to be believed).
