In series finale These Are The Voyages..., a group of unnamed alien kidnappers use this device to analyze a rare Teneebian amethyst, presented to them by Andorian Thy'lek Shran. Although Shran doesn't actually possess the stone that the aliens covet, he negotiates for his daughter Talla's release anyway, using a flawless fake gem synthesized by T'Pol. 

Repainted commonly available stud finder, with addition of detail pieces and electronic modifications.  Depressing the side switch illuminates all 4 orange-red LEDs constantly, removing the 'meter' functionality originally present. Depressing the top center black button illuminates one green LED on the right and a pair of much dimmer yellow LEDs on the far left, behind the translucent acrylic scanner disc at the front. Lighting effects present on this prop are readily matched to those in the scene.
