Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Alien Miniatures Used Inside Mothership

original movie prop

After an encounter with UFOs, a line worker feels undeniably drawn to an isolated area in the wilderness where something spectacular is about to happen. This prop miniature was used in The Special Edition at the final scenes when Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) steps inside the Mother ship and looks up seeing hundreds of little aliens behind the narrow windows. Several frames like this one shown here were placed in the "Alien Wall" as they called it and one of these frames can also be seen in "The Making Of" dvd. There are small light bulbs on the back of the prop that lit up the aliens from behind so only their silhouettes were visible on screen. The miniature aliens are about half an inch tall and all are connected to rods so they could be moved by hand appearing as if they are approaching the window to look out of the Mother Ship.
