Jaws, 'ORCA' Lobster Fishing Boat Replica (3 ft)
made from scratch model / miniature
This is my Display Piece of the famous ORCA fishing boat seen in Steven Spielbergs', JAWS.
This piece was completely built from scratch by myself, utilising various lengths and pieces of woods, metals and plastics to create as near a perfect match to what is seen on the silver screen.
Constructed in the EXACT same way as a Nova Scotian Lobster Fishing Boat (plank on beam) which is what the ORCA was designed upon, the boat took in excess of nearly 5 years to complete with the overall length coming in at just over 3 foot.
Some of the features of this piece are -
1- The cabin is designed to be the same as what you see on screen. The cabin layout changes somewhat through the movie so I tried to capture as much of the eye-catching furniture as possible. I used genuine red leather for the seating, appropriate miniature brass dials and gauges for th control panel and the First Aid kit and fire extinguisers all feature the same branding and logos. Miniature books and maps were also used for decoration.
2- The barrels were completely sculpted from a Hard Wooden Broom Handle and base painted black with a top coat of yellow... then scratched to simulate the weather beaten look of the original screen-used props.
3- All rigging is made up of genuine steel wire and fabric rope with appropriate rigging furniture (including winch hook).
4- The famous 'Fighting Chair' was created from a combination of wood, metal and plastics. This was crafted from using numerous stills and prop photos of the original piece. There is also a minature red leather cushion (with foam innards) added to complete the piece!
5- The miniature 'Greener Harpoon Gun' was crafted from Hardwood and painted to match the original.
There is an absolute wealth of detail on the piece. I even included a section of ORIGINAL 'ORCA' WOOD within the hull of this piece- what would an ORCA replica be without a little piece of the ORIGINAL boat?!?
The entire piece is custom fitted within a unit and is displayed alongside (in perfect scale I may add) one of Mike Schultz's amazing Open-Sided 'BRUCE' Replica's.
