Ghost, "For Luck" Jar and Penny

original movie prop

This is a glass jar marked “For Luck” was used in the 1990 Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore film, Ghost. The plot centers on a young woman in jeopardy, the ghost of her murdered lover, and a reluctant psychic who assists him in saving her. This type of jar can first be seen in the beginning of the film when Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) and Molly Jenson (Demi Moore) are renovating their new apartment and Sam finds the abandoned jar. He makes a comment about the single penny inside and says it’s “for luck”. You see this jar next sitting on the bedside table when the couple is lying in bed and the jar has the words “For Luck” wrote on the side in red paint. After Sam is murdered, you then see Molly rolling the jar back and forth on the floor before rolling it over the side making the jar shatter. Then its referenced towards the end of the film when Sam and Oda Mae (Whoopi Goldberg) return to the apartment where by levitating a penny into Molly's hand and mentioning the penny is “for luck” he convinces Molly that Oda Mae is telling the truth about him.
