The Dukes of Hazzard (1979-1985), original General Lee license plate

original movie prop

According to Profiles in History, from whom this prop was acquired, “these license plates are extremely rare, as most were removed and subsequently lost after the production wrapped; only three are believed to have survived.”

This is an original prop license plate used in The Dukes of Hazzard television series, on what many consider to be the real star of the show, the 1969 Dodge Charger known as the General Lee.

Columnist Dave Barry wrote about the car who stole the show in a 1982 TV Guide article: "Fan mail to The Dukes of Hazzard runs about 60,000 pieces a month, more than half of that directed at the General Lee."

Dukes fans know the General Lee's tag by heart: CNH 320...The Good Ol' Boys didn't use vanity plates.

This aluminum Hazzard County license plate features an '81 decal, like the respectable prop replicas currently being sold on ebay (although there are distinct tells between the two plate versions).  All provided images are from episodes that aired in 1981.  The Dukes of Hazzard was a primetime staple on CBS from 1979 to 1985.
