Andromeda (TV) (2000), Small miniature model weapons turret?

i thought about what this item could be for a week or two until it hit me that the only thing i could think is it looks like a miniature weapons turret from one of the ship miniature models used for filming, it even has a magnetic bottom and a cap it sits on that would have probably been for different abgles for shooting... its a neat little device.. unless someone else knows what it is? if you do let me know?
