Warehouse 13, Alfred Dreyfus Broken Sword Artifact

original movie prop

In fifth season episode Secret Services, Pete and Myka investigate a series of bizarre spontaneous drownings on land, in which the victims suddenly start coughing up saltwater and sand. The trail eventually leads to the chief of staff of a US Senator, who's been using the sword hilt of Alfred Dreyfus to dispose of everyone else involved in a smear campaign that led to a political opponent's suicide. When a glint of light from the sword hilt catches your eye, the next lie you tell results in a salty drowning death.

Alfred Dreyfus was a French military officer who was falsely accused and convicted of treason in 1895. After a secret court martial and despite his strongly professed innocence, Dreyfus was publicly stripped of his rank insignia and his sword broken in two, before being shipped to Devil's Island, the infamous rocky ocean island prison complex off the coast of French Guiana. Dreyfus was eventually proven to be innocent when the real traitor was caught, somehow found 'not guilty' of treason by another brilliant French military tribunal, and thereafter immediately fled the country. Dreyfus was released from prison by presidential pardon in 1899, although the military did not exonerate him until 1906, after which he promptly re-enlisted.
